Save the date for Engineer of the Future 3.0, 14-15 November 2010

Mark your calendar for a Summit on the Engineer of the Future 3.0 to be held 14-15 November 2010 (Sunday evening – Monday) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  The theme of the event, Unleashing Student Engagement in and for the Transformation of Engineering Education, highlights the importance of student engagement as both a necessary condition and an outcome of educational transformation, and to underscore that theme, the event is student run and especially seeks student attendance and participation, in addition to that of faculty and corporate and organizational friends.

The event is sponsored by the Alliance for Promoting Innovation in Engineering Education (www.apie2.org).  For further information about the event contact Sherra Kerns (sherra.kerns@olin.edu) or David Goldberg (deg@illinois.edu).

Steven Goldman to keynote fPET-2010

Noted philosopher and historian of science and technology, Steven L. Goldman, Lehigh University will give give an invited keynote lecture entitled Beyond Satisficing: Design, Trade Offs and the Rationality of Engineering at the 2010 Forum on Philosophy, Engineering & Technology (fPET-2010) to be held 9-10 May 2010 at the Colorado School of Mines.

Philosophy & engineering meeting, fPET-2010, call for abstracts extended until 15 January

The 2010 Forum on Philosophy, Engineering & Technology or fPET-2010 (to be held as a one-day intensive event on 9-10 May 2010, Sunday Evening-Monday, at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, CO) has extended the deadline for abstract submission until 15 January 2010 (Friday).

An extended call for papers is available as a pdf file (here) or online (here).  Inquiries about fPET-2010 can be sent to co-chairs Diane Michelfelder (michelfelder@macalester.edu) or Dave Goldberg (deg@illinois.edu).

Sign the Transformation Proclamation to change engineering education

At Olin College today, at 5:15 pm, attendees at the Summit on the Engineer of the Future 2.0 signed the “transformation proclamation” to promote change in engineering education in harmony with the practice of engineering in the 21st century.

The transformation proclamation is the founding document of a larger grassroots Alliance for Promoting Innovation in Engineering Education (APIE2).  APIE2 seeks to connect the dots between different individuals, institutions, and organizations in the furtherance of principled change in engineering education.

Individuals including students, educators, and friends of engineering education who wish to read and possibly sign the document can go to the online petition site gopetition.com here.

Planning for launch of APIE2 in high gear

The launch of the Alliance for Promoting Innovation in Engineering Education will occur at the Summit on the Engineer of the Future 2.0 (EotF2.0) to be held at Olin College on Wednesday, April 1, 2009.  University administrators, faculty, students, alums, and corporate friends from schools around the US and around the world will meet to form new collaborations in an effort to transform engineering education in alignment with the imperatives of the 21st century.  To register for the workshop, click here, or to learn more about this exciting event contact Sherra Kerns at Olin College or Dave Goldberg at the University of Illinois.

APIE2 Grassroots

The Alliance for Promoting Innovation in Engineering Education is a grassroots, open-source alliance of schools interested in transforming engineering education in a manner appropriate to the 21st century.? Using digital media, social networks, viral curriculum spread, and ubiquitous sharing, the alliance seeks substantial, principled change using a combination of pedagogical, content, curriculum, and organizational innovation.

On September 12, 2008, Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering and the University of Illinois have agreed to help organize an Alliance for Promoting Innovation in Engineering Education (aPIE2).? The Alliance is being formed now and Sherra Kerns at Olin and Dave Goldberg at Illinois are available to discuss planned activities and involvement.
